Legend of Rawhide
Legend of Rawhide

Legend of Rawhide
Each summer during the second weekend of July, the residents of Niobrara County enact a full-scale western pageant, complete with mounted cavalry, horse and ox-drawn covered wagons filled with eager western pioneers, and a village of Native Americans. We call this the Legend of Rawhide; it is a story about a hateful white pioneer who shot and killed a Native American maiden. You may find out more about the Legend of Rawhide by visiting the Legend of Rawhide website.

Fossil Hunting
The Lance Creek fossil area, in Niobrara County, is famous for its Cretaceous Period fossils including the first Tyrannosaurus rex fossil which was discovered by paleontologist Barnum Brown a century ago. At this time there is one ranch business which specializes in teaching people about how to map, identify bones, and excavate fossils; they can also visit fossil field sites on the ranch. For more information, go to www.paleopark.com.
